Martha Anne's Story
Life
I began my schooling in 1944 at Maple Grove Elementary School in Rogers, Arkansas. Our family lived on East Oak Street, 3 blocks from the school.
I attended Rogers Junior High in the 7th and 8th grades, 1950-1951, 1951-1952. My best friends were Peggy Jo Clardy, Mary Frances West and Lucy Mae Jacobs. My brother, Gene Holt, was in the same class. I was always in awe and in love with his friends, Max Clark, Mark Davidson, Rex Easterling, Clayton Eversole, Butch Beck and Delmer Farrell.
In 1952 our family moved to Monett, MO., where I finished the 9th grade in May 1953, before my Dad was transferred to Fort Smith, Arkansas with Arkansas Best Freight. (Now ABF)In the short time at MHS, My friends there were Sondra Kessanger, Shirlene Garoutte and Patsty Cox.
In 1955, I married Van Buren High School (VBHS) '56 classmate, Kenneth B. Poague. We have a son, Ken E. Poague, who received his MDIV in Theology and will complete his degree in Accounting in May '09. He and his wife, Nancy "Brown" Poague have provided us with ...Expand for more
2 grandchildren, Rachel Renee and Christopher Lee, ages 27 and 26 respectively.
In 1961, I married John Aaron Owen, a VBHS '55 class grad. We have an adorable daughter, Laura Dee Ann Owen Martindale, who is a Senior Investment Closing Manager with G.E. Capital Real Estate in Dallas. She and her husband, David, are both employed by G.E. Capital and a source of joy to both me and John.
In 1994 I married yet another '56 Van Buren classmate, Eddie Nichols. Until his death on August 6, 2005, we lived on cloud nine, disguised as our home, resting on a mountain in the Dora community, Van Buren, AR. I now mourn the loss of this wonderful, loving man; whose passing has left a hole in my heart that will never be filled.
I continue to work in the occupation for which I have served as the Executive Director for 44 years: Western Arkansas Employment Development Agency. (WAEDA) This profession has proven both rewarding and challenging. I will retire when they pry my cold hands from my computer keyboard.
